As was the October 1 dip in the lake. Most magical of all was the wonder that surrounded us - every tree, leaf, stone, ripple of the water and northern lights.

Thank you so much for sharing your paradise with us for a few days. There is so much to share about this beautiful sacred space, but any words that can thought of just seem wholly inadequate. We liked the guest who referred to it as being just like a fairy tale. That’s a great description! But it is so much more.

We were searching for a safe space for quiet solitude and reflection, as we mourned the sudden and unexpected loss of a beloved brother due to pancreatic cancer. the winding trails throughout the space, the grandeur of the unbelievable eagle’s nest, a breathtakingly cold swim in Lake Medora, hours spent at the Point watching sunrises and sunsets, and even sneaking out very late one night for an unbelievable star show (thanks so much for the flashlight in the closet).

Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor are both so great (especially the lighthouses and the incredible waterfall in Eagle River, and The Jampot is one of our favorites). But the very best part of all of it is just being in Anam Cara and the spiritual silence and peaceful retreat it provides for one’s soul. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful space with the rest of the world.

Highlights: hikes around the property, sunrises on the misty lake, sunsets, fires outside at night, and up one at 2AM trying to see the northern lights - very faint - our was it our imagination. When we booked Anam Cara, we had some worries that driving such a long distance for our getaway wouldn’t be worth it. (TN-MI) But we would do it all over again in a heartbeat! It provided the rest and rejuvenation we were hoping for. It couldn’t have been more beautiful. We loved exploring Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor, but truly we could’ve spent our entire time at the cabin. Walking the trails, canoeing, reading for hours at the rocky point, and staying up late to watch the night sky. We even got to witness an incredible display of the Aurora Borealis! Thank you, David and Colleen, for all the attention to details and for providing this incredible getaway. We will never forget it!

A Most Serene Family Vacation

My wife, our two young daughters (3 y and 9 m), and I spent a week at Anam Cara this past August. That week thoroughly exceeded our expectations and we look forward to returning at the soonest possibility. The design of this cabin and the property on which it sits make it a true rarity. Situated down a private drive, ten to fifteen minutes from the main road, the location provides quiet privacy, but closeness enough to pop into Copper Harbor for a few groceries or a scoop of ice cream in the evening. There are serene views from practically every window of the cabin. The interior design features and exterior landscaping enhance the experience further. The Rocky Point (complete with patio chairs), the beach by the Point House, and the campfire pit in front of the cabin were some our favorite outdoor spots on the property. Having young children along, we chose to avoid restaurants and cooked almost every meal at the cabin in its well-equipped kitchen and also on the barbque grill, conveniently located in its own ventilated section of the sun porch. In the evenings with our youngest asleep (and in easy range of the monitor) we enjoyed campfires and smores. Our greatest adventure of the week was paddling the complimentary canoes to the far side of Lake Medora and disembarking to explore a couple of the islands - would highly recommend if you're comfortable on the water. Additionally, would add that the property is well-located for any number of adventures on the Keweenaw, though we never felt as though we had to leave to find enjoyment. Overall, our experience was the ideal balance of natural aesthetic design, privacy, outdoor activities, all with modern conveniences. Our hosts were also very helpful in answering our questions and making sure our stay was going well. Highly recommend staying at Anam Cara.

Anam Cara was absolutely amazing. The pictures in the listing are beautiful, but the cottage is so much better in person. I was in AWE the moment I walked up to the front door. The bedrooms are very comfortable, the kitchen and living areas are well appointed and cozy, and the property was breathtaking. We came for our annual week of mountain biking in Copper Harbor and ended up spending most of our days biking around the property, paddle boarding around the lake, and star gazing at night. Thank you David and Colleen for making this one of our best vacations yet!

Anam Cara made for a very special vacation for our family. It’s hard to put into words how much natural beauty surrounds you here! We enjoyed our time outdoors - fishing, taking in the view from the point, canoeing to the islands, swimming, and walking the trail. The house is absolutely wonderful. We especially enjoyed the screened-in porch for eating meals or lounging, while still taking in great views and feeling the summer breeze. The hosts were incredibly gracious and welcoming and provided lots of helpful information. We also loved exploring the spectacular area including Copper Harbor, hiking at Hunter’s Point Park, Horseshoe Harbor, and Estivant Pines, and checking out nearby beaches and restaurants.

Let me start with the property is magical. The gardens and trails around the house are whimsical and lovely. You can wander around and find something new to see and explore for days. We spent every evening on the rocks by the dock and watched the sunset. Then built a fire and had smores and watched the stars come out.
We took the canoes out on the lake and my daughters played in the water at the beach. We saw the bald eagles nest and the fledgling in the nest.
The house is as unbelievably charming as the hosts are gracious. This house is truly a work of art. Beautiful and comfortable. My only wish is that there was another bedroom so we could come back with the grandparents and share this magical spot with them.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. The beds were comfortable. The drive to the house is bumpy and long so plan accordingly. Doing that more than once a day isn't ideal. We went out each day to explore and made sure we had our dinner and food plans ready

David and Colleen’s home on Lake Medora is absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed a week at their beautiful property, canoeing in the lake, swimming at the private beach, watching the eagles in their nest, and exploring the hiking trails. We visited Copper Harbor for mountain biking, hiked Estivant Pines and Horseshoe Bay, and spent an afternoon relaxing in a sauna and cold plunge at Takka Spa just 15 minutes from the house. David was very communicative and attentive and was an excellent host. We loved our stay and will be back!

From the moment we arrived, I was struck by the sheer beauty and peace of this rare spot. Surrounded by water, with the freshest air I’ve breathed in many years, it is truly a unique and wonderful spot. So much trouble has been taken to create unique features, like leather-upholstered window seats look out on the lake and beautifully curved pieces of wood incorporated into the design! You can feel ti was created with love and respect for the natural world by which it is surrounded . I loved sitting in each of the window seats reading, and we took some breathtaking hikes in the area. I feel truly grateful to have had the chance to stay in this unique and beautiful spot in a remote, pristine and truly gorgeous location. I very much hope to have the opportunity to return. Thank you so much for all the care you took to make our stay wonderful!

WiFi connectivity not a problem. Area itself has poor cellular connection with ATT. Lots to do. Genny’s grocery in copper harbor has everything one might need. Owner very helpful with specifics. Planning to go back ASAP!

The Magic of Anam Cara

My wife and I spent 10 days at Anam Cara in late November. It's a magical place. For one, the cabin itself spares no detail in terms of artistry and creativity - the lamps and light creations are stunning. It's amazing to be inside a cozy cabin, lit up by these amazing lights, especially in the darker months of late fall. The area is amazing as well. There's walking trail around the area which snakes around old pines. We loved seeing the sunlight hit the water in the morning. The whole area is serene and peaceful and is perfect for just unplugging and relaxing. Estivant Pines nearby in Copper Harbor was beautiful to hike around in as well.. especially in late fall!

Oh, and there's also a great book selection in the cabin - probably hundreds of books - fiction, non-fiction, etc.. and so we spent most nights just reading in front of a crackling fire in the fireplace. We really couldn't have asked for a better stay here - Anam Cara is pure magic! We will definitely be returning.

Our stay here at Anam Cara, 47 degrees N, has been one of revisiting boyhood memories from summers ago. We had a spectacular time here at your lovely cabin. Your cabin is a jewel!!
Two gales, plenty of rain yet we’ve been snug, warm and well sheltered because your cabin is as tight a a drum. With a 30 knot wind that we rarely even hear when we are inside. The systems all well chosen. Hydronic heat warms without noise.
The exterior slabs of bark are new to us. What a striking exterior they make with the veneer of stone. The live edge sills are very appropriate. We frequently use Marvin windows in our construction projects. I like the cross mullion above sight line.

We are most appreciative of your care and kindness, David and Colleen. Sadly we leave Anam Cara tomorrow with hopes to return.

A few recommendations: Amy J’s Pasty, Hancock, MI - hot, out of the oven, gigantic pasties and cookies. Morning Sunshine Food Truck in Copper Harbor - made to order cornmeal horn hole pastries and excellent coffee. Upper Peninsula forests and wildlife - so much color and we saw eagles and a wolf!

We were so incredibly fortunate to find this enchanted place! I showed a picture to our granddaughter (7 years old) and she said "Nana, that isn't real!" In a way, she is right ... any place that looks so magical seems unreal! And yet Anam Cara is real and magical. We have fallen hard for Anam Cara in such a short time - this is heaven on earth! The main cabin is so welcoming, comfortable and furnished beautifully. It was fun to explore all the interesting touches - the inventive finishes, the amazing homemade lighting, the use of natural materials - every time we looked there was something new to see. Everything was clean and very easy to check-in. We love all your creative (and organizational!) touches. Our stay was far too short but we will indeed return for a full week and look forward to sharing this "Brigadoon" with our family and friends and plan to be return visitors often.! Unique, secluded lake cabin off the beaten path

This property is located on picturesque Lake Medora and a mile and a half off the beaten path on an old mining road, with a view of Brockway Mountain. The cabin is very clean and well equipped with standard necessities. The owner has obviously put much thought and effort into having a unique cabin indoor lighting experience, some custom made lights very cool, some a nice try, but interesting to say the least. The cabin is on a secluded point facing NE with viewing NW to SE (good star gazing coverage). A love seat and foot rest (recommended) in front of the fireplace would be a nice addition to the amenities after a fun day exploring the Copper Harbor area. The cabin has a three season porch and a screened in porch for different weather conditions. The owners are quick to respond to questions or needs.

An absolutely spectacular getaway in one of the most picturesque parts of the Keweenaw Peninsula. We knew that Anam Cara would be a special place from the well-presented photo spread on the website, but our expectations were far exceeded. We really appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship of the secluded home, the whimsical illumination and decorations and the well organized layout and labels! All made for a comfortable stay. As well we enjoyed the trails through the lakeshore grounds. The lighting in the house is amazing, and the modern kitchen, though small, is well appointed. The photos on the website are accurate, and if anything, don’t do full justice to the coziness and serenity of the place. We can’t get the Keweenaw out of our blood so we hope to return in the future.

Aman Cara is truly a gem! We absolutely loved our stay! Exactly the quiet, peaceful, beautiful place we were hoping for to enjoy our 10th anniversary. David is an incredibly considerate host, and very easy to communicate with.

The house is very thoughtfully designed to blend in with the natural environment of the boreal forest surrounding it. We loved exploring the house and noticing all of the interesting details. The handcrafted lighting is stunning. The outdoor shower in the perennial garden was probably our favorite feature of the house.

The grounds of the property are also incredible! We loved sitting on the point watching the water and the clouds. We paddled around the lake one day and swam at the sandy beach. Also, a great spot from which to explore the Copper Harbor area. Another highlight for us was dancing to our wedding song inside the screened in porch after enjoying our home-cooked dinner.
We hope to return to Aman Cara again soon!

David and Colleen, you have built a house with so much thought and care that your are following Alexander, Ishikawa and Silverstein and making them proud (Pattern Language). But it sin’t just the house design, the grounds as well feel spiritual, connected and uplifting. So many nice considerations that filled the heart, from the Mezuzah to the candles to the exterior shower made our 10th anniversary complete and elevated our stay to a truly extraordinary experience. We did start with several excursions to Bare Bluff, Sand Beach, Harbor Haus, but in the end we just wanted to stay here. So much joy. Thank you.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin! It's very secluded and quiet. The cabin is very beautiful and cozy. I’ve been in construction all of my adult life and I really enjoyed this cabin: the fit and finish along with the craftsmanship, well designed and put together. We really enjoyed using the canoe to paddle around the lake. By the way the lake is super clean! You can see the bottom for a long ways out. Perfectly clear! Also the hosts are very nice and their communication was top notch. The cabin was very nice and exceptionally clean. Overall we couldn't have been happier with our stay. Thanks again. We certainly made some great memories.

We had an amazing 3-day stay at Anam Cara! It is truly a magical space. On a chilly fall evening, it was great to sit by the fireplace and just enjoy being in this peaceful place. During our stay, we didn't hear a single motor, dog-bark, or even see anyone else - we loved the tranquility! The winding trails around the property are perfect for hiking and when we visited, we got a hint of the fleeting fall colors. Anam Cara is also only a short distance from Lake Superior, and we had an awesome time exploring Hunter's point. On top of all this, David and Colleen were wonderful hosts. We can't imagine a more peaceful place to visit - we loved this place and hope to return!

Anam Cara is an amazingly beautiful and thoughtfully designed cottage in a spectacular, remote setting. The long, pretty, slow speed entry road and driveway (we were there during the height of the fall color season) make you feel like you have this this whole large lake to yourself. David and Colleen sited their cottage to slip gently into the mature woodland on their point, and with the lake on three sides there is always the glimmer of light on the water from every window, which gives a very special quality to staying there. Every convenience has been provided for, and the quality of the design and creativity and character brought to this cottage is unsurpassed in our experience of rental homes - real artistry! The trails on the property are a treat, as is sitting out on the rocky point soaking up the surroundings . We will certainly be going back, and can’t recommend it highly enough - what a magical place!

Our second visit to this spectacular cabin. This is an exceptionally beautiful cabin and property - we travel a lot and Anam Cara is simply incomparable. The thoughtful touches, hand-made lamps, the decor, the surroundings - it’s soul nourishing and inspiring. There’s honestly no way to really capture in words how uniquely magical and gorgeous this place is.
On this vacation we had a bit of bad weather, which was perfect for reading and just plain relaxing. We finally had a chance to read the Welcome Guide and like everything about Anam Cara, it’s a fascinating read, unlike any other welcome guide we’ve come across.
David and Colleen are perfect hosts - ready to answer any questions, warm, generous and patient.
When the weather improved, we hiked the mile long trail, gaped at the scenery and hung out on our favorite spot - the rocky point. We even did a bit of yoga on the Bridge to Nowhere.

We spent three weeks at Anam Cara and if there is a more enchanting spot in the Midwest we have not discovered it.

From the inviting cabin-house to the curated mile path through the woods to the rocky point surrounded by quiet lake views, Anam Cara is itself a wonderland.  We thoroughly enjoyed our days and nights on site nature-walking, reading, canoeing, camp-firing and star-gazing. Without leaving the property we also saw ducks fishing, a pair of otter swimming, an eagle soaring, fall colors emerging, and the Northern Lights.  The cabin is laid-out thoughtfully with comfortable spaces, modern conveniences and evokes a warm and rustic-natural atmosphere. It is unusual to find a house of this quality on an exceptional property for rent.

We trailed in a 16’ aluminum fishing boat which provided us with fresh bass and perch dinners plus great tours of the quiet lake. During our entire stay we came across only two other fishing boats!  The dock at the house was exceptionally high off the water which made it challenging to get in and out of the boat although we appreciated the electricity located near the dock.

 While the property is well-secluded it is also a great basecamp for exploring the best the Keweenaw Peninsula has to offer.  Scenic drives and activities are plentiful in every direction.  We particularly enjoyed hikes through the forest, visiting an abandoned mining village, and wading into Lake Superior at different rock and sand coves.  It is a short drive to Copper Harbor where the general store had an amazing variety of essentials in a small space and is your best food supply outside of Hancock.  Although, Jamsen’s bakery, The Brickside Brewery and the Harbor Haus restaurant were very good options.

David and Colleen were exceptional hosts, gave us a full introduction on our way in, and were quick to respond to any questions.

This was our family's first trip to the UP, and we wanted to do it right...the property offered EVERYTHING AND MORE!! The kids (ages 6 and 8) loved the private beaches, jumping off the dock for our "dock party", canoeing, fishing, bonfires, berry picking, short walks, outdoor showers with the flowers and bees, star-gazing, and hanging in the hammocks -- all from this property! If there was rain, the kids snuggled up in the fairy alcove reading or watching a movie on their tablets, or playing one of the several games the owners have.

Aside from all the activities the kids (and parents) enjoyed, the property is spectacular! The cottage itself offers every amenity needed; from dishes/cookware, laundry, plenty of linens/beach towels/towels...everything to make you feel at home. We did bring our own laundry soap, dish soap, paper towels, and trash bags (so as not to usurp the supplies), but these supplies are there. The owners really know how to make others feel welcome and the love for the cottage and property is evident. There is exquisite detail in every turn of the cottage and overall property.

WOW is all we can say! The property was amazing and beyond perfect. We have rented several houses over the years and this one is #1. The owners were super, very informative, and helpful. Loved that they stayed in contact with us every step of the way. It was a great experience! Wish all owners were this way. The house was unbelievable. It is remote and so peaceful. We never heard a car or even a dog bark. We loved having our coffee on the dock each morning while watching the sunrise. We even could see the sunset from the rock in the evenings. My husband caught several walleye, perch, and small mouth bass from dock and we loved being at the beach swimming and watching the chipmunks and squirrels. We saw ducks, deer, loons, cranes, otters, and beavers. We walked the many trails and loved the flowers around the house. The outdoor shower was GREAT! So much to do at the house, we hated to even leave to explore the surrounding area. Normally we do not return to places we have been before but this will be the one exception! Thank you for the hospitality and sharing beautiful Anam Cara with us for the week.

“Anam Cara is a wonderful place to spend time. Quiet, peaceful and well thought out. My wife and I spent a week there. We appreciated the well equipped kitchen with sharp knives (nobody as of yet has used them to chop firewood) and nice cookware that has not been in the dishwasher (never put aluminum cookware in the dishwasher) Especially pleasant is the lake facing enclosed porch and the lake deck built between two rock outcrops. The cabin is on one of four contiguous lots that the owners have along the lake, so there's plenty of space right on the property for exploring and a lot more on the other side of Washington Mine Road for hiking on what looks like ATV/snowmobile trails. The town of Copper Harbor is an easy drive from the property. It has a great general store that is remarkably well stocked for such a small out of the way town (we got Hungarian paprika there, really. In a town of 100 permanent residents. Amazing) Try the brew pub across the street from the store for locally brewed beer. After that take a drive up to Brockway Mountian lookout and find Anam Cara with your binoculars. When you're at Anam Cara, you can see the lookout from the lake deck. Thanks Dave and Colleen for a very pleasant stay.”

“This place was one of a kind cabin, truly breathtaking (inside and out) and no expense was spared on the design and execution of this cabin. Although winter in the UP is a challenge and not for the faint of heart, we made the best of it and made some great memories on the trip. You built a truly unique retreat unlike anything I have ever seen. It's just a beautiful place. I have never seen snow drifts so large. It was breathtaking. Some places—houses, cabins, cottages—are so infused with goodwill, kindness, and creativity—that entering them feels like reuniting with an old friend. There’s a sense of familiarity, or maybe even ‘déjà vu’. Anam Cara has that effect on people. 

Though Anam Cara isn’t that “old”, it’s so well-rooted in its location, and its building materials are so archetypal and solid that it feels like it’s been sitting in its wooded landscape, set back from Lake Medora, for centuries. 

There’s a kind of ‘sentience’ to the main cabin, the ‘Point House’, and the surrounding land—a sentience in the best kind of way. The cabin and Point House are refuges, and you feel welcome and secure as soon as you enter. My wife and I thought this ineffable feeling was partially due to the extraordinary lights and lamps that David has created over the years. The result is magical. 

Then there’s the deep pleasure of sitting at the big oak table (found on one of Milwaukee’s streets and lovingly restored), or in the comfortable chairs in the main room. Both Colleen and David have a great talent for creating an atmosphere of hospitality and delight, and every aspect of Anama Cara reflects this—from the big room downstairs to the bedrooms above, from the screened porch to the outdoor shower and the fire ring where you can cook hot dogs and roast marshmallows as night falls and the stars come out.

Anam Cara has it all—an atmosphere that encourages relaxation and slowing down, but also gives guests the chance to walk a beautiful loop trail on the property, canoe Lake Medora, or venture further afield if you want. 

David and Colleen are wonderful hosts. They give guests complete privacy, but are also available if there are questions. 

My wife and I visited Anam Cara in July, after I’d gone through a long period of extreme stress and was kind of a mess. Our stay at Anam Cara was healing and rejuvenating. Thank you, Anam Cara…..I can’t recommend this magical, unique, and timeless retreat highly enough!

A magical escape in the Keweenaw!

Our stay at Anam Cara cabin was an amazing experience. My wife and I stayed the weekend along with two of our friends. We are from the Houghton/Hancock area so we're no strangers to staying in cabins or spending time outdoors. But being Anam Cara felt like we were in a different state altogether. It seemed like we had escaped to a remote location in the western mountains, even though we were less than an hour away from home. The attention to detail throughout the cabin is incredible, from the handcrafted lights to the custom log staircase. The entire cabin was spotless and the furniture was really comfortable. The check-in and check-out process was very easy and David was excellent to communicate with. He made sure we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying our stay.

During our weekend, we spent a lot of time outside. We hiked the mountain biking trails then rode them with our bikes. We paddled the canoes out to the islands on the east side of the lake for an afternoon picnic. We captured some amazing photos along the way too. After our adventures outside, we returned to the cabin and prepared some delicious meals while the fireplace was lit and jazz music was playing on the surround sound system. Overall it was an extremely relaxing stay and we can't wait to go back! We highly recommend Anam Cara cabin to anyone looking for a magical escape here in the Keweenaw!

We enjoy the fall season with somewhat cooler days and found this property and location to be not only warm and cheerful but especially enchanting and magical. Located at the tip of Michigan’s Keweenaw peninsula, just south of Copper Harbor, this property sits on a large secluded parcel on Lake Medora. The architecture is intimate with a cottage like quality one would find in a classic fable but with all the well designed modern amenities. Unique use of materials tells a story of this northwoods boreal region emphasizing its connection to the land. We walked the birch, spruce, balsam and white pine trail with its boardwalk, rugged shoreline and connection to the Point House also located on the property. Perched at the edge of the lake with numerous Canadian Shield granite outcroppings underscored the beauty and numinous energy of this location.

Our hosts where available to answer and accommodate any questions or needs we had making this a pleasant memorable stay. Both my wife and I would highly recommend this property and look forward to staying here in the future.

The setting of the house blends seamlessly with its surroundings creating a relationship between inside and outside, as if the house and the natural world around it are having an ongoing conversation. Silence is On Golden Pond

From the moment we left the highway we knew we were somewhere special. Anam Cara embodied our desire to be in a quiet place surrounded by nature and all its beauty. The cottage is immaculate. The owners have thought of almost everything.....though I would have liked a gas grill for outdoor cooking. But that's it. Everything else was really, really enjoyable and well thought out. We are outdoors folks so having our own personal hiking trail for wildlife viewing and quiet walks was so cool. There is a long and rocky shoreline that is perfectly suited to casting for that big one. Within 20 minutes there is Copper Harbor with a multitude of hikes, viewings, and other activities....ie...mountain biking on a world class level. We hit peak colors and could not believe how awesome it was.....even just driving down the access road. There is an excellent restaurant in town.....Harbor Haus. Seriously good chow!!

David and Colleen generously provided fire wood which we made use of along with some I brought along too. Bonfires and the Milky Way.....shooting stars and chardonnay ! And all on a dead calm sunset that morph's into a night sky of stars and satellites. What else could you ask for? Except for a repeat....and again. There is also a canoe which we were able to take advantage of and discovered a huge Great Blue Heron just down the lake . Honestly, my only regret is that we booked one week not two. I do not plan on making the same mistake next year.

I stayed here in October of 2021. The drive through the Keweenaw was stunning. So much color, even in late October! The cabin is situated on a secluded plot of land on a beautiful lake, but still a close drive to downtown Copper Harbor and many outdoor activities. Anam Cara is a very special place. There is plenty of history involved with the construction and design of the house, and the owners share the story with you in the house book. Our favorite parts of the cabin were the custom lighting pieces and the back four seasons room. While at the cabin we had a fire in the fire pit, explored the property, and spent time indoors appreciating the space. My only wish is that I had stayed longer! If you're looking for a place to stay in Copper Harbor, highly recommend this cabin.

When I found Aram Cara on VRBO, I thought it looked like an enchanted, fairy-tale house. It did not disappoint! Our stay was short … only 2 days … but it was heavenly. We even postponed our planned outing until after we left because we wanted to just explore the grounds. The house is so beautifully detailed & well thought out. You can tell that the craftsmanship & planning were all executed beautifully. The grounds are magnificent & very private. The owners, David & Colleen, have not only thought of everything you could need or want while staying there, but go out of their way to ensure that your stay is as comfortable & pleasant as possible. This was our first trip to the U.P., although being lifelong Michiganders. We toured the entire peninsula & just loved everything about our trip. Aram Cara was the icing on the cake!

The cabin is everything in the pictures and more! My wife and I couldn’t believe the attention to detail and the level of curating done to decorate this home. It is truly a special and unique cabin. Stepping outside, we were absolutely in awe of the lake and surrounding scenery. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind and get back in touch with nature. We had a great trip to the Upper Peninsula and we couldn’t be happier that we chose to stay in this cabin.

My husband and I stayed 6 nights at this house on a lake, and were very happy with everything about it. The owners sent a large amount of useful information about the property and area ahead of time (we enjoyed reading it, but did very little during our trip, as we just wanted time to relax somewhere beautiful on a lake. We did enjoy dinner at the Harbor Haus restaurant in Copper Harbor - very impressed by the quality of the food there, especially considering it is such a small town). The house is reached via a few miles on a well-maintained dirt road; it is very well-marked and we had no trouble finding it. The house is charming, with many unique features and obviously well-thought-out for the comfort of guests. Everything was scrupulously clean, and the beds were very comfortable. Also, everything was in excellent working order. The owners left a gift basket for us with snacks, which was very kind and was a wonderful gesture. Unlike many vacation homes in cold climates, the house has many windows and gets excellent light; there is a screened porch on which it was very pleasant to sit one day when it rained. There is a dock on the lake in front of the house, and canoes and a kayak to use on a sandy beach just nearby, as well as a wonderful trail through the property. It felt very quiet and secluded, but was not very far from town, and there are many scenic drives and hikes in the area. In short, it was a fantastic place to stay, and we can't recommend it highly enough.

This home and property exceeded our expectations. It was created by a lovely couple who clearly both planned and executed very well their vision. We loved noting the details of the construction and design which are further enhanced by the natural setting. Shortly after our arrival,we had the pleasure of meeting our hosts, David and Colleen, and had a lovely conversation getting to know one another. We were very comfortable in this home and found all we needed to enjoy our time. After days of hiking and exploring, we came home to Anam Cara to relax and restore. The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful to take in while we sat on the property's point on the lake. What a beautiful and peaceful place this was from which to briefly escape the goings on in the world. The trail was a special treat to explore the property at the beginning or end of the day. We managed to find time to take our kayak on beautiful Lake Medora. The location of this house was ideal for the adventures we planned for the Keewanaw Peninsula. This was our first time visiting the UP and staying here made for a perfect experience. We are grateful to have found this temporary home! Memorable for all good reasons.

Magical cabin in the woods

The photos don’t do this property justice. It was so cozy and quiet! If you truly want to get away from everything, this is the place to do it. The cottage is at the end of a long gravel road but is only about 5 miles from Copper Harbor. We cooked steaks over the fire one night but had enough dinning options in town as well. We had the opportunity to meet the owners who were wonderful people and were really interested in making our stay the best it could be. We can’t wait to go back when we have more time.

We had a lovely time during our stay at Anam Cara. Beautiful property inside and out. The lake views are breathtaking. We fished and took the canoes out a few times. Spotted 2 young bald eagles soaring above us while canoeing. Cooked some meals and enjoyed the evening by the fire. Our kids loved exploring and had a great time catching crayfish in the lake. We enjoyed all the activities advertised. We met David and Colleen on our last night and they are both lovely people. We enjoyed our short chat with them and our tour of the point house (the other smaller house on the property). We definitely recommend a stay at Anam Cara. The house was clean and inviting. We also enjoyed all the cool lighting features David has made...really illuminates the house in the evening! A 5 star rating from this family!

The cabin is well-appointed and just as it appears in photos. The setting couldn’t be more perfect and is a great spot for a quiet retreat. From the moment we arrived at this cabin, we felt overjoyed with the magical place we had found. The hosts were attentive and made sure everything was taken care of. Every detail of this cabin were explained prior to our arrival. They have different restaurants, stores, and an idea of the area. The cabin was clean, organized, and beautiful. The lights in this home were phenomenal. Our daughters were able to take a lamp kit home with them. It is a souvenir they will treasure. The property was fabulous. We were able to canoe, fish, hike, swim, make campfires, and our daughters loved trying to catch crawfish on the lake. It was a great getaway for our family. We will treasure the memories we made at this fairytale cabin.

Could not have been happier with our stay. The cabin and property could not have been more perfect, quiet, peaceful, or in a more beautiful spot. Really beautiful home and every view a delight. Truly a Northwoods experience. Only animals, wind in the trees and water sounds. Wonderful walking paths. Dark skies full of stars. Birds n deer. Canoeing too. The house was spotless and comfortable and very artistic everywhere. All the 'mod-cons' you could need and a truly hand crafted home.

Magic is the word that tends to come up when we think of our stay at this amazing property. It really does feel like a fairy tale! The setting, at the end of a long gravel road through the forest, where you are greeted by a display of flowers and this stone/wood/bark cabin, sets the scene. The interior of the cabin is a treat for the eyes and senses, it just feels inspiring, calming and welcoming at the same time. Actually, I could go on and on about the details, large and small (like the lighting!), but I’ll just sum up it by saying it’s an enchanting place. And then there’s the outdoors. Ours was a short stay and we never left the property, there was so much to do. We hiked, biked and ran the trail, noticing something new each time. Loved the bridge to nowhere - what a surprise find! - and did yoga on the rock! We also canoed and explored the lake - even had a picnic on the largest of the islands one day. On another day we felt lazy - read in the hammock that the owners supplied, hung out on the rocky point, and made a simple supper with grilled hot dogs on the open fire. It was absolutely rejuvenating! We’ll definitely be back soon and will book an entire week so we can have time to check out Copper Harbor and all the other neat things in the Keweenaw. On our way home we went through Copper Harbor (a neat town!) and then drove along the Lake Superior shoreline on M-26. Highly recommend this drive. Can’t wait to come back - we’ve stayed in many places over the years, but this is our favorite, hands-down. Oh, and I didn’t even mention the eagle’s nest…so cool…or watching a hummingbird hover while I was taking an outdoor shower. David and Colleen - you’re incredible hosts and have created a place of enchanting beauty and magic…thanks so much for sharing this!

Wow - unparalleled!

I honestly don’t know where to start. I travel often, and this place is unparalleled in so many ways - it was, hands down, the most incredible cabin and property I’ve ever seen! I’m almost hesitant to share this review to ruin what feels like a secret discovery. We literally just left and have already contacted the owners to inquire about booking again and making it an annual trip.

The owners David and Colleen are wonderful hosts - interesting, helpful, and friendly - and they put thought into every last touch. The cabin itself has every creature comfort you could possibly need, impeccable design and decor, and exquisite hand-made lamps throughout. But even beyond the cabin itself, it is on THE BEST part of Lake Medora! There’s a cool rocky point, views of the islands, a deck, a dock, sandy beach, canoes, an almost 1 mile walking/hiking trail circling the property…I could go on and on. There’s honestly no way to really capture in words how uniquely magical and gorgeous this place is.

With all the lounging and adventuring we could possibly need right out the front door, we never actually felt the need to leave the property! But Copper Harbor is its own fairytale. If you’ve seen Northern Exposure, then I don’t need to explain the intrigue! And then you’ve got the shoreline of Lake Superior, world class mountain biking, etc etc etc.

Staying here is like living in a storybook. Did I mention the outdoor shower??
