The Cabin

Anam Cara is a secluded, luxuriously comfortable, dreamy, one-of-a-kind place in one of the most beautiful parts of Upper Michigan. The main cabin is a handcrafted work of art, just 6 miles from Copper Harbor in one direction and Mount Bohemia in the other direction.  The artistic 1400 square foot cabin sits on a billon-year-old rocky point, surrounded by perennial gardens.  It’s been described as a Hansel-Gretel fairytale house with its stone and bark exterior and tiled roof.

Designed for up to 4 adult guests, Anam Cara can be a romantic get-away, a creative retreat, a gateway to adventure, or simply a time for recharging and comfort.  With a special kids’ alcove, it can also be a memorable family vacation.

Each light-filled bedroom comes with a comfortable queen size bed, gorgeous lake views, artistic lighting, a closet, writing desk, and a ceiling fan (for those rare warm days).  We provide high quality bedding with a choice of percale or flannel sheets. The master bedroom has its own attached bath with granite counters, travertine tile and slate flooring. The 2nd bedroom has its own dedicated bath that is similar to the master bath, but also has a window above the bathtub for scenic gazing while you soak your cares away.  Shampoo, hand soap provided.

Light-filled bedrooms with beautiful views.

Bathroom #2 - relax in the tub while taking in the view from the window.

A luxury kitchen with views

The custom kitchen is also fully stocked. You'll enjoy a double Silgranit sink, granite countertops, cherry cabinets, a fridge/freezer with a filtered water/ice cube dispenser, microwave, toaster, coffee brewer, water kettle, electric stove with 4 burner cooktop, popcorn maker, blender, Fiestaware dishes, a full Oneida flatware set and ample cooking utensils and storage.  We supply condiments such as salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, ketchup, mustard, olive oil.   With the open floor plan, you can cook a gourmet meal while enjoying conversation and the views. Paper towels, dish & hand soap provided.

Dining/Living area with wood burning fireplace.

Comfort, beauty, art, charm. There’s a TV hidden in that coffee table/chest.

The living area has wrap-around views in all directions. The dining area has comfortable seating for 8 at our slab oak table, which is a restored curbside find from the 1930’s.  The dimmable Arroyo Craftsman chandelier is one of the view lighting fixtures we didn’t make ourselves.  There is a stone, wood-burning fireplace and firewood is provided.  The living area has two leather window seats, a comfortable matching sofa and chair, and a coffee table/chest with a top that ingeniously hinges up to reveal a flat screen smart TV (wifi only with Netflix/Amazon Prime).  Enjoy some of the several dozen unique handmade lights.  There is a built-in desk and a half-bath right off the living area.

With comfortable seating, wrap-around views, and a circular table for eating, the screen porch is a great place for reading, conversations, sipping a bottle of wine, and just gazing at the scenery

The entry has plenty of hooks and a coat closet on one end with a washer/dryer combo behind the other closet door.  There is a utility sink conveniently hidden underneath the stairs but accessible through a set of double half-doors.

You’ll find a great selection of books on our many custom-made slab bookshelves. The stair treads, stair rails and most of the window sills came right out of our woods. On the right is a lighted glass walk that provides access to the kids’ niche - often called the Fairy Alcove.

The cabin is fully insulated and is extremely energy efficient. In-floor heating on the first floor makes for even, quiet warmth on the coldest winter days. We have no A/C, as Lake Superior keeps us comfortable, but just in case, there are ceiling fans in the two bedrooms and on the porch.

There is an outdoor shower with hot water located in a secluded nook and surrounded by perennial gardens.

Towards the lake there’s a fire ring with cooking grate (we also have a Weber gas grill), a picnic bench and a storage area for firewood. You can lounge on the rocky point or enjoy the wood deck overhanging the waters of Lake Medora.  We provide a hammock that you can string between some shoreside trees.  In addition, you have all of the 11+ acres for roaming, including a 1+ mile hiking/biking trail, two sandy coves, and a permanent wooden dock.  We also supply two canoes, paddles and adult life jackets.
